Today on #your6essentialswe’re hearing from the lovely Lucy, a perinatal mental health nurse and mother of one. Lucy helps mothers with pre-existing mental health illnesses or those that develop throughout pregnancy or the first year of motherhood.
1. What was your pregnancy essential?
Gü Key Lime Pies. I couldn’t keep anything else down for the first 6 months of pregnancy – I lost 2 stone! If it hadn’t been for them I would have starved to death. But a close second are my maternity tracksuit bottoms, which I still wear on days when I feel lazy and overwhelmed.
2. What is your Motherhood essential?
Difficult… probably wet wipes! I use far too many though and recently found out they contain plastic so I really must find an alternative.
3. What is your essential piece of advice?
It will get better!! I felt pretty awful during the first few weeks, and felt like I’d made a huge mistake, but she grew on me and now I can’t imagine life without her. No one talks about it though so there’s this huge expectation to be blissfully happy, and I really wasn’t.
4. What is your handbag essential?
8 Hour Cream, Elizabeth Arden.
5. What is your winter essential?
I always steal my husbands Parka in the winter, which really annoys him – so that.
6. In a professional capacity, what piece of advice would you give to a struggling new mum?
Newborns are incredibly hard work – it will be the hardest time and you will be exhausted – but it passes quickly. Get help anywhere out can – enlist friends and relatives – get sleep where you can. People always want to help, but we seem to be terrible at accepting it. If things feel like they’re too much or not getting better, tell someone.
