This Friday on #your6essentials we’re hearing from Katie, aka @thebalanceddoula . Katie is mum to a gorgeous little lady and works as a doula providing support throughout pregnancy and birth for clients based in London and the surrounding areas.
1. Your pregnancy essential?
I always had a big bottle of water and snacks with me wherever I went! Staying hydrated during pregnancy is so important and I felt thirsty all the time. I also found that if I didn’t eat regularly I felt quite nauseous so making sure I had some nuts or dried fruit with me all the time helped keep the sickness at bay. I also loved rosehip oil for preventing stretch marks and it worked an absolute treat!!
2. Your motherhood essential?
Support. That can come from family if they are close by or friends. I am not shy in asking for help or asking for a break. Even if that means catching a nap or taking the dog for a walk. Just having regular time where you aren’t “on duty” is so valuable. Motherhood is not designed to be done in isolation and having a community around you is vital for your mental well being. It’s always ok to ask for help.
3. Essential piece of advice?
Trust your instincts. This is true for pregnancy, labour and postnatally. You are the mother and you know what’s right for you and for your baby. Don’t feel under pressure to perform a certain way. What works for you is the most important thing. And babies don’t “sleep through the night,” but you will be asked it so many times. I always just say “she sleeps normally for a baby” and leave it at that!
4. Your handbag essential?
Water and Burts Bees lip balm (original honey flavour) it’s the only thing that helps my cracked lips!
5. Your Winter essential?
For me it’s the Burts Bees again! My winter essential for Athena is a pair of waterproof fleece lined dungarees from Spotty Otter. They are amazing and keep her really warm and dry on horrible cold days. We can still go for walks in the park and to the playground and she stays warm and dry!
6. Your new year’s resolution is…
I haven’t really made any specific resolutions but I have some goals for 2018. I am going to start a Doula and Hypnobirthing Podcast with a friend very soon. I also have an idea for a short film that’s very woman focussed but I won’t give too much away about that just yet! 😉
